The School of Tourism at the University of Zaragoza (ETUZ) is embarking on a pioneering international project titled “Establishment of an Observatory on Tourism in Mountain Refuges”, an initiative funded by UNITA through a Starting Grant.
UNITA – Universitas Montium is an alliance of European universities, including the University of Zaragoza, that promotes academic and scientific cooperation in mountain regions and rural areas.
The aim of the project is to analyze, from a multidisciplinary perspective, tourism in mountain refuges across the Pyrenees, the Alps, and the Carpathians, and its relationship with sustainability, culture, and the environment.
Professor Dr. Roy Janoch, a faculty member at ETUZ, will lead the School’s research team on behalf of the University of Zaragoza. The project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Turin (Italy) and the Transilvania University of Brașov (Romania).
The project, which will take place during the 2025/2026 academic year, focuses on the creation of an Observatory on Tourism in Mountain Refuges, aiming to better understand visitor dynamics, resource usage, and the impacts of tourism in high mountain environments. In addition, the project will explore how these practices can contribute to preserving the cultural heritage and traditional ways of life of local communities.
